Deep drawing part Definition

Deep drawing part Definition

Deep drawing is a sheet metal forming process in which a sheet metal blank is radially drawn into a forming die by the mechanical action of a punch. It is thus a shape transformation process with material retention. The process is considered “deep” drawing when the depth of the drawn part exceeds its diameter.

Deep Drawing vs Casting

Drawing is a cold working process, while casting is a hot working process. Through fusion, the material is turned into a liquid state by heating and then poured into special moulds where it solidifies and assumes the desired geometry. Casting techniques are not suitable for all types of materials and the fusion and castability of the alloy to be cast always needs to be checked. Typically, it is used to produce objects and components for faucets, handles, coffee machines, carburetors, valves, etc.

Designing viable parts by deep drawing part often results in lower unit costs, higher productivity and quality, and often lower production costs. Not surprisingly, many parts that used to be produced by casting have been converted to deep drawing.

Frequently Asked Question

Do you have any question?

This is one of the most common deep draw problems. Fracturing of the metal during the draw process can be caused by several issues although the most common is the clearance between the punch and the die. If this is too small, too large, or uneven, the material can be cracked during drawing.

All the factors involved in a deep drawing manufacturing process will have an effect on the quality of the part. Sheet metal parts can be tested for formability. Blanks are often printed with a square grid with circles in each grid box. The squares and circles distort with the sheet metal as the process occurs.

Although the finished product might look simple, and no doubt the experts make it look easy, the deep drawn process is actually one of the most complicated methods of manufacturing available. The act of forcing metal into a given shape introduces a host of possible problems and concerns.
